Ratings aggregation site Metacritic has released its first annual “Game Platform Power Rankings,” which calculates the scores of each of the six most popular platforms’ top selling software. The Playstation 3 came forth as 2009’s big winner, with the Nintendo Wii grabbing last place (it should be noted, however, that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 had the year’s highest amount of positively reviewed (75%+) games.) Metacritic has announced intentions to release a report in January detailing the correlation between scores listed on their site and sales.

From the article:

“The Power Rankings combine a variety of factors — all involving the quality and quantity of titles released during the year — to rank the six major gaming platforms. Although Xbox 360 finished with the highest number of positively-reviewed titles (88 games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher), and though Nintendo’s Wii had the largest total number of releases (a whopping 362, or almost one per day), the PS3 console showed the best overall game quality for the year. Among other factors, five of the 10 highest-scoring games in 2009 (for any platform) were PS3 titles, including the year’s top game: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.”

  1. I like Metacritic… it is a very fair way to compile games by score. And didn’t PC come in Second (they actually had a better review average than the PS3, but didn’t come out with nearly as many reviewed games).

  2. Not as bad as I expected for many of the consoles. If it were last year I’m pretty sure that bad percentage would be far surpassing the good for the Wii. I have to wonder what the 1 “GREAT” Wii game was this year. I don’t recall any Wii game scoring all that high, I just remember a lot of okay-good games.

    1. Metroid Prime Trilogy… it is amazing, but it is still a re-release of games that have already come out… nothing new.
