Study: Female MMO players more “Hardcore” than Males

A 7000 player study of Everquest II published in the Journal of Communication reveals that female gamers are more dedicated to MMOs then their male counterparts. Some conclusions drawn are as follows:

-Female gamers on average logged more hours per week than male players (29 hours vs. 25 hours)

-Female gamers underestimated their time spent playing more than male players. Male respondents underreported their estimated time spent playing by about 1 hour/week, whereas female respondents underreported by about 3 hours.

-New media such as video games and MMOs must be taken into account in complex ways as researchers continue to refine gender role theory
