And the Most Pirated Game of 2009 Is…

…Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. According to .torrent file trend analysts TorrentFreak, Activision’s blockbuster shooter’s records weren’t just limited to launch sales, as the game 4.1 million copies of the PC version game were illegally downloaded on BitTorrent alone. The Xbox 360 version saw the second largest plundering with 970,000 copies reportedly swiped. Compared to last year’s most swashbuckled release (Will Wright’s Spore, 1.7 million downloads,) the trend is evidence of a culture still rife with piracy, a problem that only seems to grow with time.

Details on the PSP, PS3, and Nintendo DS were not released, but the Nintendo Wii saw a surprising bit of pilfering with several of its AAA releases; New Super Mario Brothers Wii (1.15 million downloads,) Punch-Out!! (950,000,) and Wii Sports Resort (920,000,) seeing major numbers obtained illegally.

Arrr I see lotsa piratey colloquialisms here.

But it’s to be expected. Maybe if they hadn’t removed dedicated servers it wouldn’t have happened. The reason Spore was so pirated was because of the Securrom and stupid licenses.

If you piss off your consumer, they’ll steal your product.

If you piss off PC players enough, they will do a couple of things.

      1. Pirate your shit
      2. Mod your shit so it plays right
      3. Combine steps 1 & 2
      4. ????
      5. Profit

      Something like that.
