User Keck282 has been nice enough to donate a copy of Bioshock to the Elder-Geek cause and he’s giving it away in the world’s easiest contest. Here are the official rules!
Hello all! I am holding this little contest for the simple reason that I own the original Bioshock on PC, and I do not need a second copy of the game. This is a win-win situation, one lucky person will get the game since I am pre-ordering Bioshock 2 on Steam, and not buying the game in stores. The rules are as follows:
1. You must have a Steam Account
2. You must prove that you do not own the original game
3. You must Join the Elder-Geek Steam Group, http://steamcommunity.com/groups/ElderGeek
4. You must be on my friends list, otherwise I will not bother giving you the game, I do not want to mess with giving it to you over e-mail or trying to find your user in the community (that is a colossal mess), This is the reason for the Steam Account, so I can see what games you do own,
5. You must give me a creatively good reason why you deserve the game. It needs to be in one paragraph of no more than 6 line
6. Your reason must be posted in the Steam Group page; that way is makes it easier for me to give you the game.
This contest will last until Sunday at 5pm Pacific Standard Time.
Get Cracking, This will be interesting.

There you have it! Giving away games to help further the community! Thanks Keck!

I would love it, but my laptop can’t run it (I already tried).
I’d love to give the game a try…. but nothing is worth signing up on steam. But good luck to all those who are eligible.
What? Why?
Why not, there are lots of deals on Steam, it eats your bank account, but at least you get lots of games for good prices. I like the boxes sometimes, but they take up room, especially PC games up to about two years ago.
Not even for TF2?
because Valve personifies everything I consider to be wrong with the video game industry and I’d rather give my money to other companies who do similar things than them.
Valve does nothing but pump out shovelware shooter after identical, crappy, shovelware shooter…. the only good thing they’ve ever done was create portal… and they make a fortune pumping out crappy shovelware shooter after another.
Because I have no respect for them as developers… I refuse to give them my money or hits.
Half Life ain’t no Halo or Call of Duty! Half Life actually has a good story. Team Fortress 2 is probably one of the best FPS Online only games since it actually takes skill to play, besides, they are always giving you free content and the community gives you free content. L4D is a great coop game that allows you to mod it, plus the sequel is better than the first, especially when the mod community has made it so you can use the maps from the first in the second with all the new weapons, health, and special infected. I hardly think Valve is doing a shoddy job with their games. They are hardly a shovelware shooter.
The Call of Duty Franchise got old after 4, especially since they are releasing game after game every year, and there is little modding you can do with MW2, practically none at all. What’s wrong with the game industry is Activision , developers who put out meaningless DLC for outrageous prices that was actually part of the game in the first place, and developers that get lazy and don’t want to fix their game if it is broken (see Sega on Beyonetta) , or make online a bitch to play (see Gearbox on Borderlands before the patch that just came out, yeah you had to port forward and for some reason I couldn’t get my ports to forward, allowing Steam support would have been nice, especially since the game was available for purchase on steam).
But Each to his own. What is your Stance on Impulse, Stardock’s Digital Distribution service, or IGN’s Direct to Drive? Wouldn’t those be wrong too?
Nope, I have nothing against direct to drive services. Its VALVE I don’t respect.
Impulse and D2D, and the soon-to-be Battle.Net Marketplace, etc… those are all fine by me. I just personally have no respect for Valve, so I will not use their service.
comments need an edit… I decided to reply to your o ther points as well…
I personally feel that nearly ALL first person shooters are basically shovelware. However, Valve knows that shooters will sell like hotcakes and they’ll never have to really be creative because they’re just making the same damn game over and over again…
(Note: I say NEARLY all because a few of them have demonstrated that they can innovate… MW2 from what I’ve heard has added a number of multiplayer ‘rpg like elements’ to help expand the genre, and MAG for the ps3 has incorporated a number of unique concepts as well… and from what I’ve heard the nature of Bioshock makes it an exceptionnal experience as well… so FPS games CAN be innovative… its just so rare that I feel pretty safe in saying ‘nearly all’… oh and moddability does NOT make a game innovative… it makes the people playing the game innovative… so thus has NO reflection on the developer. Warcraft 3 is good because its warcraft 3 and the first good strategy game with rpg/hero elements… not because DotA has reached worldwide acclaim.)
However, no other ‘major’ company releases JUST first person shooters. Most companies have some diversity.
As to Activision… I have some gripes with them, but at least they’re putting their money into a variety of large and small developers supporting overall growth in the industry rather than just more and more shovelware shooters. Overall I’d say Valve is the WORST game developer I know of. Yes, the WORST. I don’t really care if a developer makes their game moddable… Yes, its a bonus, but its not a necessary thing to make a good game. I don’t really care if developers release good DLC, if a full game sized DLC has a full game pricetag… thats no problem for me.
SO, your deciding to base your judgment on Valve on games that were made from 2004-2007? Besides, Valve with the release of HL2 did set the standard for FPS games with a compelling story. 2K took off of that idea and made Bioshock. The Modern Warfare stories are not compelling at all, there are WOW moments but hardly anything to applaud. True IW did start the whole XP system in CoD4, but with the perks and all, it really kinda too the skill out of playing online, especially with MW2 with all the new perks that just make it easy to rack up kills.
You also forgot about Gmod, that isn’t an FPS, that is more like a Mod tool that is a game that uses all the assets from all Valve games, so you can have races and make Machinima.
WE have yet to see what HL2 ep3 or HL3, or whatever they are calling it, is going to be. It could be mind blowing or just another generic FPS.
But whatever, you are losing out on the competition. It is your choice what to do with your money.
No, I’m judging based off of every game Valve has developed to date. With the exception of Portal.
I checked wikipedia, I checked a few other sources. To date every game valve has made has been an fps to date with the exception of portal which was still sort of fps-esque.
HL2 is utter crap in my eyes. Both HL and HL2 are. The ‘good story’ they have is so trite and poorly written that I couldn’t bear to get through to the end of them.
If Valve were EVER to release something that wasn’t an FPS… I would be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and consideration again… but as long as they’re just sticking in their shovelware rut… they’re not worth my time, consideration or even having me as an active user on their service.
What I find really amusing is that you’re acting like me considering their games shovelware is a personal offense to you… do you work for Valve or something? lol
No I do not work for Valve, I live near them, but do not work for them.
I do have to ask though, what FPS games do you consider to be Great? Cause if you say Halo, then I know you are trolling massively. You do have to realize that Half Life helped to change FPS games, and because of HL Deathmatch, the epic mod that is Counter Strike was made, yeah a mod.
The other question is how old are you anyways?
I don’t really consider ANY FPS to be great. Some are decent, but most are just shovelware. The last time I had REAL fun playing an FPS was Heretic, and even then the game wasn’t anything special but it was fun at the time.
Mind you, I was like 8 at the time, so maybe in the 16 years since my tastes have matured and I just no longer enjoy the mindlessness of the FPS anymore. But really, I’ve played a few FPS and the games feel like graphically enhanced versions of Heretic with more weapons and less fun… which is why I call FPS almost all shovelware.
Good man, are you a troll?
Not at all, I was merely intending to wish good luck to those who were eligible. I certainly did not intend to cause an argument.
But on the oher side of it… if expressing my genuine opinion is trolling… then I guess it was trolling
Randy, can you change that date to Sunday at 5PM Pacific Standard time?
Took your suggestion to heart.
Keck 4 The Win!
Yeah, well I could have given the game to one of my other friends, but I thought this might be better. And it is kinda ironic that I am giving out the game, since Bioshock is anti-altruistic.
And the Winner is…
Zkylon, since he was the only one who participated. The Response was good, and no, Would you kindly will not make me give you the game, I am immune to that phrase.
Would you kindly hand me over your Bioshock copy?
If that doesn’t work, know that i’m the first recorded case of kid born without legs, got leg implant, lost both legs again in car crash (nazi drivers). Now i’ve got one arm and one elbow instead of legs. Pants are difficult to put on. Bioshock would help.
Awesome! Grats Zky! Good thing you don’t really need legs to play this game
Oh and Keck, I think it’s super-awesome that you did this contest! <3
Yeah, even though it had its hitches, I still came through with my word.
DAMMIT! Too late to the party as usual. Never played it, but Randy has been bugging me to get it since it came out. Oh well. Way to go Zkylon!
