Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has reported that Square Enix will soon create a new title in the Lufia series. Taito, now a subsidiary of Square Enix, has announced that the original development team of the original Lufia and the Fortress of Doom will be working on the new title, currently known as Estpolis: The Lands Cursed by the Gods.  (The series has always been known as Estpolis in Japan.)  The intended platform is unknown (but predicted to be the Nintendo DS) and we can expect more info when Famitsu’s full reveal comes out on November 19th.  So sit tight!

Some might remember the two SNES titles being on our list of Ten More RPGs You Might Have Missed so that should give you an indication of our excitement.

But what about you?

  1. I know I sound like a broken record but honestly–I’d kill for HD versions of 16-bit RPG’s on PSN. Redrawn HD backgrounds and HD sprites and fully orchestrated music with minor tweaks to improve gameplay.

But this is great news. Shows that Squenix has some love for its older and less popular franchises. Now let’s just hope it doesn’t go the way of the Mana series.

    1. I know what you mean… I wish they would freshen up the old classics with HD textures, like Odin Sphere and SF2:HDRemix. I think it looks way better than this 2.5d thing thats been happening. I love sprites!
