A lot of analysts are still blinking in confusion after the puzzling announcement schedule coming out of Nintendo’s portable gaming division. Months before the DSi XL unit was to be released in the States, the Big N announced the development and impending release of another, arguably superior, 3DS unit. Some have supposed that the inconvenient marketing usurpation of the 3DS meant that it was Nintendo’s original plan for the product’s push.

“Apparently, the Japanese press was all over it and talked with suppliers there and Nintendo just wanted to get out ahead by breaking the news to prevent a leak,” said Billy Pigeon, senior analyst with M2 Research to CNBC, “Does it clash with the DSi XL? Yes it does. The XL is old news, however, in Japan – and Nintendo is a very Japan-centric organization,” he added. “This is just the corporate parent in Japan maybe not acting in the best interest of Nintendo of America.”

  1. The 3ds is a weird beast… I’m not sure a handheld has a place being 3d… how far can you get a 3d image to stand out from a 10 centimeter screen?
