While the Netflix feature on the Xbox Live dashboard has been disc-less since day 1, the highly anticipation of the streaming software to the Playstation 3 came with a bit of a concession: discs that had to be inserted whenever “Instant Watch” queues want to be accessed. Analysts have seemed to agree that the disc was in place in order to avoid specific terms in an exclusivity agreement with Microsoft, but soon the PS3 will be ditching the disc entirely. A planned Netflix in October will attach the program to the PS3 hardware itself, according to a report filed earlier by the company. No word on whether the same update will be coming to the Nintendo Wii as well.

“Before our next call in October, we expect to be launching a major new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn’t require a disc and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.

  1. Sweet. I knew it was going to be soon (as in one year, and the Wii will get a similar thing too).

Might just make me finally subscribe since I will be getting more money this year to cover a subscription, well hopefully if I have a job through September (it is a project job, but more stuff keeps getting added, so that will be good).
