A week ahead of E3, THQ has confirmed that a sequel to 2010’s apocalyptic hack-‘n-slash title Darksiders is in the works at Vigil Games. The game was revealed by Game Informer, which features the title on the cover of its July issue. The cover art, as well as the currently available information regarding Darksiders II, can be found after the jump.

In Darksiders II, players will take control of Death, the fourth and final Horeseman of the Apocalypse. According to THQ, the story of Death will run paralel to the events of the original Darksiders, with the new protagonist setting out to clear the name of War, his fellow Horseman of the Apocalypse and protagonist of the original. In doing so, he uncovers an evil that threatens more than just the Earth alone.

Darksiders II will feature a larger world than the original, as well as full weapon and armour upgrade systems. Vigil Games promises “bigger and more challenging dungeons and vast array of new enemies and bosses.”

It is currently unclear if Joe Madureira, the creative director of the original, will be involved in the development of the sequel.

The game is set for a release in 2012 on PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Additionally, THQ has confirmed that the game will not be presented at E3.

  1. Why is everyone saying that Darkstalkers 2 is just being announced? I have known about this sequel for almost a year now. THQ announced that it would be a trilogy after the first game sold so well for them.

    1. This is the official announcement of the game. While many companies state intentions for sequels after high sales, usually the “announcement” of the title comes after the developer has been in production long enough to at least produce some preliminary details, if not screenshots and trailers.
