The team that brought you Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? on the PSP are hard at work on a new action RPG for the PS3, simply titled The Witch and the Hundred Soldiers. Playing as a “Hyakkihei,” a term referring to one of the hundred soldiers (and which also translates to “Hundred Soldiers”), you are cast in the service of the beautiful marsh witch Metallica, who is at war with a comparatively unattractive and unnamed forest witch.
Your soldier is small framed but well armed, and will hack and slash through top-down battle stages rather than any cohesive overworld map. The larger goal is to explore and purify the world with a magic known as a GIGAcal, which is replenished by chowing down some food (cal = calories, in this case). While you are but one of 100 morally ambiguous soldiers, the other 99 brothers in arms can be called on for special attacks, a tactic the Nippon Ichi team suggests will be crucial to victory. You’re also undead, so don’t expect any game overs.
The Witch and the Hundred Soldiers is scheduled for release in the Spring of 2012, in both standard and limited editions. The latter contains the game, a soundtrack CD, and a figurine of Metallica with (gasp!) removable hat.
