Speaking to Engadget, Microsoft’s senior director of product management Albert Penello has said that the Xbox One will not even be able to play disc-based games without a mandatory day one update.
“Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update,” Penello said, in part. “A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn’t have even been done. You’re gonna need to take this update. It’s not gonna be really an optional thing.”
When asked what someone could do with an Xbox One straight out of the box, Penello replied: “Nothing. You need the Day One update.”
Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 will also require a day one system update which will activate features such as Remote Play, Play as you download, gameplay sharing and also Blu-ray player functionality.
