Sony Santa Monica has been hit by an unknown number of layoffs, IGN reports.
“SCEA can confirm that we have completed a reduction in workforce at Santa Monica Studio,” the company told IGN. “This is a result of a cycle of resource re-alignment against priority growth areas within SCE WWS,” Sony added. “We do not take these decisions lightly. However, sometimes it is necessary to make changes to better serve the future projects of the studio. We have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease transition for those impacted.”
Sony did not specify how many employees are affected, but IGN believes the studio has been forced to cancel one of its current projects.
Sony Santa Monica is best known for creating the God of War series, but is also a studio that collaborates with other indie studios to assist in development on PlayStation games. This follows the news from last month when the studio confirmed it was relocating and expanding its business so it would be able to house 2 indie developers at the same time, instead of just one.
