Lionhead has announced that its upcoming title Fable Legends will be free to play when it arrives on Windows PC and Xbox One later this year.

“This means you’ll be able to download the game on either system and play through it beginning-to-end without having to spend any money,” Lionhead said, in part. “We want to open the exciting world of Fable to more players, and we see free-to-play as a great way of doing that.”

Players will have access to a roster of heroes that will be available for a period of time, they will cycle in and out, however players can choose to purchase a particular hero they like with in-game currency that can be earned, and purchased. Cosmetic items will only be available for real-world money, and for those opting to play as a villain, the in-game currency can be used for creatures and traps.

“We want Fable Legends to be a brilliant game, and we have taken extra steps to ensure that the free-to-play model does not define the game. Our focus is on delivering high quality content for you to enjoy,” Lionhead explains. “Following the launch of Fable Legends we will continue to deliver regular updates including new Heroes and Quests for you to play.”
