Arguably the most beloved RPG ever made, Square Enix’s Chrono Trigger has been the target of fan and critic ardor for years. Obsidian Entertainment appears to collectively be one of the game’s biggest fans, to the level of wanting to be in charge of the next game in the franchise. The two companies are currently working together on Dungeon Siege 3, and have apparently been tossing the idea around for quite some time.
“We were talking to Square for quite awhile,” said Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart. “You make RPGs, we make RPGs, it would be great to see what we could do together. And they really wanted to start getting into Western RPGs. And, so it kind of all ended up fitting together.”

I think Obsidian has good storytelling capabilities. Their track record shows that they do good with other IP’s/engines. That said, Chrono Trigger was created by a “dream team” of some of the best game minds in Japan at the time. This was all the way down to music and art.
Personally, I don’t want to see Obsidian touch Chrono Trigger whatsoever. The only way I’d be fine with a new one is if they brought back almost all of the old team together for another go. The game will stand the test of time as is.
While I’m sure many of Obsidian’s staff would love to touch Chrono Trigger. Being realistic. Of course the studio heads want to do another Chrono Trigger. It’s almost guaranteed to be well received and a financial success. I don’t want that “good” or even “great” with another Chrono Trigger. I want masterpiece 2.0, and at the moment I don’t see Obsidian capable of such a feat.
Yeah, I am with you. I have to say that Obsidian might want to work on it, but I would leave it up to the guys at Square Enix since SE knows how to get people to work on a project, and they own the IP anyways.
I too want to see another Chrono Trigger, but it needs to be done by the right people and not people who really want to work on it (although that would mean they would be careful with it).
I would like a new Chrono Trigger, but it would have to have closer ties with ChronoCross. I can’t see a Chronotrigger type game succeeding in today’s market, especially one made by Obsidian.
