“Project Cafe” has been confirmed. As part of their semi-yearly financial update, Nintendo revealed that they would indeed be revealing a new console, completely playable, at this year’s E3. The new hardware is scheduled for sometime in 2012, the Big N releasing no other details on the product.
A new report out of IGN is claiming to have some early specifications on the console, which supposedly includes a modified AMD R700 GPU, a custom triple-core IBM PowerPC CPU chipset, and a $400 price tag. Another new potential name for the console, Stream, also hints at a much more serious initiative into online play than we saw with the Wii. None of these details have been confirmed by Nintendo.
IGN Report – Rumored Wii 2 Specs
• GPU – Wii 2’s GPU will be a modified version of AMD’s R700 architecture.
• CPU – The CPU will be a custom-designed triple-core version of the IBM PowerPC chipset.
• Visuals – Project Cafe will run in 1080p, and may be able to utilize Stereoscopic 3D, though it hasn’t been confirmed as a feature.
• Size & Design – The console will be around the same size as the first-gen Xbox 360, and may be designed to look like a futuristic looking Super Nintendo.
• Price – Say goodbye to Nintendo having the “budget” console: Project Cafe may cost between 350 and 400 dollars.
• Release Date – Supposedly, the Cafe itself could be ready to ship from the manufacturer to retailers as soon as mid-to-late October, but in order to give developers more time with the new hardware, Nintendo may not launch the console until early 2012.
The Wii 2/Project Cafe/Stream starting to look good, E-Gs? Or are you holding onto some skepticism until the E3 reveal? Comment below!
Well compared to the PS3 and 360 launches, it is a budget priced console, especially since the system is supposed to be more power than the two aforementioned systems.
I am gonna be skeptical on anything about the system until E3, cause Nintendo has all the information. Speculation can make people angry at the writers of the speculated content or disappointed in the system when it is shown (especially when the previous system had a lot of flaws). This is going to be one interesting E3 for sure.
If that is the real controller, I’m giving up officially, once and for all, on Nintendo. That controller looks worse than the original XBox’s controller.
However, until we have some real details, I’m not going to close my mind to it…
“Stream” could just also be a continuation of their controversial titles. And I’m more tempted to call it the ‘Wii Stream’ just for amusement factor.
That is a mock up by some fans of the outrageous rumors about the controller. I am not giving the rumors much attention because it is just that, rumors. I will reserve my judgments about the system and controller until I see it revealed at E3.
ya I know, but of the mockups that was the most conservative… lol
But no, I agree, I’m reserving judgement until we have all the info – but if they DO something stupid like make the controller huge with retarded addons that are completely unnecessary… then that’s it.
This is Nintendo’s last chance for me, they’ve failed me on everything in the past like 6 years and I can’t keep getting my hopes up that they’ll do something right. So they have one last chance before I just give up on them completely.
…. but I *reallY* hope that Nintendo redeems themselves here, because I miss my Metroid, Zelda, and Mario… and its been years since I’ve been able to like them.
