As always, Sony’s official response when contacted is that the company “doesn’t respond to rumors or speculation.”

Rumor: Dante’s Inferno 2 Already in the Works?

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010 | Posted by Gavin Greene | No Comments

A Super Bowl television spot can help sell anything, as the folks at Visceral Games can surely attest. Thanks in part to its aggressive media campaign, the studio’s Dante Inferno sold surprisingly well, despite lukewarm reviews. And, if a recent job listing from the game’s publisher Electronic Arts is any indication, a follow-up to the revisionist take on the ancient epic poem may already be underway.

With classic console back catalogs making their way to handhelds and consoles alike in droves, it comes as little surprise to hear of the possibility of Sony’s Playstation Portable receiving a collection of Turbografx and Neo Geo titles. Assorted games from both libraries were previously made available in the Japanese Market via Playstation Network downloads, but so far the West has yet to gain that ability. The emulation apparently comes with updating your PSP to the 6.30 firmware, as the above picture indicates. No confirmation from Sony has been given, and no ports have yet to be announced.

Rumor: Japanese Retail Site Lists Next PSP

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 | Posted by Gavin Greene | No Comments

With online retail sites being the new method dejour for leaking new hardware – especially on the Sony side of things – (see: PS3 Slim), the fact that a new model PSP is being listed on a Japanese retail web portal has garnered some interest. More prevalent, however, is that both the new model PSP (termed PSP-4000) and the E3-winning Nintendo 3DS are listed as becoming available at the end of this year, in Japan at least. As expected, the official comment from Sony when asked by Elder-Geek is that the company does not speak on rumors, but with TGS around the corner and a lot left uncovered in the Playstation brand at E3, there exists a strong possibility that the PSP has a bit more to give than just a new ad campaign.

Rumor: Natal Priced at $149

Thursday, May 27th, 2010 | Posted by Mats Paasche | 2 Comments

A new rumor has surfaced from Edge on the pricing of Microsoft’s upcoming Natal motion device. According to a “trusted source” Natal will launch in October at $149. This is in huge contrast from what we’ve been hearing for the past year from Michael Pachter (among others) where the price was predicted to be around the $50 mark, also according to “trusted inside sources.”

This time however the rumor has a bit more evidence backing it up. A month ago several Swedish retailers “listed” Natal for $1499 Kronor (Swedish currency). This directly translates to about $200, but due to inflation it more accurately represents a price of $150.

Attentive readers will notice that this is considerably more expensive than Sony’s Playstation Move device which will launch a starter pack including game for “under $100”. Additionally the source told Edge “Microsoft expects to sell millions and millions of Natal units in its first year on the market so you can expect the software launch line-up to target non-traditional gamers,” as well as confirming that Natal is just a placeholder name, and that it’ll definitely be renamed.

Premium PSN Rumors Getting Stronger (UPDATE)

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 | Posted by Gavin Greene | 2 Comments

Premium Playstation Network access has been an idea in Sony’s executive minds for years, and if the strengthening rumors are true, the idea will soon be a reality. A “highly placed source” has hinted at a large-scale monetizing plan for PSN, one that will open up a bunch of new features for a yearly cost. Current owners will not see any features or services they currently enjoy taken away, although those that wish to upgrade may receive things like a streaming music service or greater internet site-based support like XBL’s Twitter integration. As per usual, Sony’s response when contacted by Elder-Geek where that the company “doesn’t respond to rumors or speculation.”

Aliens vs. Predator Dev Accused of Wage Withholding

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 | Posted by Gavin Greene | Comments Off

Rebellion Studios has seen better days, recently closing its Oxford studio and laying off many employees across the board. According to Develop, however, there is concern that that may not be the extent of the company’s woes. Employers at Rebellion’s Derby headquarters may have withheld wages for the month of April (and related compensation packages) from its recently laid-off staff. If true, the act heightens the possibility of a bankruptcy claim coming in Rebellion’s future, which would allow such an action to take place.

A rumor so close to confirmation that gamers are already trying to pre-order, PlanetXbox reports that a sequel to the dietetic arcade tag-team fighter Marvel vs. Capcom franchise is in the works. Rumor: Gamestop Prime for Private Takeover?

Thursday, March 25th, 2010 | Posted by Gavin Greene | No Comments

While Gamestop is still one of the leading sellers of video game media, the company has made no secret of its recent downturns on investment and capital. Perhaps its for these reasons that the rumor mill has been whispering of a possible takeover of the corporation by a private equity firm. The move makes sound business sense, with outlets like theStreet.com predicting offers going as high as $4.94 billion, a 33% premium on Gamestop’s current market value of $3.27 billion.

While almost obligatory enough to not be a rumor, whispers on the latest sequel to Cliff “McBiceps” Blezinski’s third-person shooter series Gears of War have already started floating around the internet. Coming in from Edge magazine is a more substantial speculation that puts Gears of War 3 as already deep in production, and scheduled for an April 2011 release.
