A franchise that sells is one that will never die. Sony has released multiple statements to that effect surrounding its God of War franchise. Whether God of War III was the end of Kratos or just the conclusion of the first trilogy, gamers can rest assured that there will be more Deicide to come. And if New Zealand online retailer Mighty Ape has their “estimated” release dates right, we may only have to wait until September of next year.

Only a Grand Theft Auto could spawn such a tumultuous flood of news with a debut trailer. Since the trailer’s launch yesterday, Rockstar has officially announced the title, calling it “the largest and most ambitious game” in the series. While the Los Angeles inspired San Andreas has been confirmed as one of the game’s central locations, there has been no word on any other returning locales. All revealed so far is that “Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California”. Multiplayer was confirmed for the game, although no details on how the campaign suite will manifest.

The industry’s move towards a digital system of distribution is inevitable, but Rockstar may be preparing to set the trend in motion sooner than anticipated. According to the Market Research Group Newzoo, all copies of Grand Theft Auto V will be shipped in boxes sans disc, instead containing some collectible merch and a download voucher. Should Newzoo’s report (uncovered by Industry Gamers) be accurate, the shift to an all-digital sales push by one of the games industry’s biggest brands could have a market wide effect with both AAA and indie releases.

By now the gaming world is abuzz with the sheer flood of possibilities a simple logo could mean. Rockstar’s announcement of a debut trailer (out next Wednesday, November 2nd) for Grand Theft Auto V came with a title screenshot and no other details. As expected, such a challenge has brought out the conspiracy nut in everyone with a blog, leading to a massive fold of speculation on what a green roman numeral could mean.

While there can be no doubt that at least one more console generation waits in the wings, the exact launch date for new hardware from Microsoft and Sony has been anything but specific. And while the release timeline of the Playstation 4 still only exists in the vaguest of rumors and hearsay (despite internal studios reportedly beginning production on games for the console), Develop has released a cumulative report pointing to a more precise launch window.

The more observant among us gamers have found a new platform referenced in Steam’s service support page library: the Xbox 360. The discovery has many analysts scratching their hands, as most of the year’s major announcement venues for Western audiences (like E3 and Gamescom) have already passed. Valve has yet to respond to the rumor. The developer/publisher has previously expressed interest in expanding the digital download platform to the 360, but claim to be unable to make that decision due to Microsoft’s tight hold on its Xbox Live infrastructure.

After having to cut the 3DS’ price tag by $80 barely six months after its launch, its not too hard to believe that Nintendo is willing to take its latest handheld back to the drawing board to get it up to par with the Big N’s previous portables. Cue the rumors! 01net is reporting a major redesign coming to the 3DS: including a reduced focus on 3D, a second analog stick, and perhaps even a re-branding under a new name.

Eurogamer pulled on one of its anonymous sources to report that 2K Games and Gearbox will be announcing the production of Borderlands 2 “soon”. According to the website, the expected release date for the title would be sometime in 2012, although no concrete details have been published yet. Gamers and analysts began to expect a sequel to the open-world shooter once the original became a cult hit, but rumors officially began circulating at the title appeared on a developer’s resume profile. Borderlands 2 is expected to launch on the same platforms as its prequel, meaning PC, PS3 and 360.

Another upcoming piece of Sony hardware, another swath of (likely true) release date rumors/leaks. Blockbuster UK listed an upcoming video game release schedule, which looks to include a street date for the Vita handheld. According to the posting, gamers will be able to pick up the device on October 28th. The date has its skeptics though, pointing out that Sony had mentioned Europe would be getting a later release than Japan and the States, and any earlier date seems a bit too soon for analysts.

IndustryGamer sources at a “top developer” have claimed that Sony’s Playstation 4 is expected to revealed sometime next year, most likely at one of the larger industry trade shows. This potential reveal could easily be moved up should Nintendo’s Wii U tablet find extreme financial success, or should Microsoft announce a successor to the Xbox 360 within the next six months.
