ZeniMax Files for ‘Dragonborn’ Trademark

Having recently filed for a trademark on the iconic “Fus Ro Dah”-shout, ZeniMax has now also filed for a trademark on the term “Dragonborn” itself. The trademark application was filed earlier this month and was uncovered by Fusible. More details are included after the jump.

Ron Gilbert’s Double Fine Adventure Game Revealed

Sega announced that it will be publishing The Cave, the new adventure game from Ron Gilbert (Maniac Mansion, The Secret of Monkey Island), which is set for a release sometime in early 2013. In development at Double Fine (unrelated to the studio’s now famous Kickstarter project), The Cave will release digitally on Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and PC, keeping in line with the developer’s retooling of their release strategy back in 2010. Sega’s Senior Vice President of Digital Business Haruki Satomi stated that the release is the first part of the publisher’s plan to focus and expand its own digital gaming catalog.

Heroes & Generals enters into Closed Beta

Independent studio Reto-Moto announced the launch of the official closed beta for Heroes & Generals, the upcoming massively multiplayer shooter that features explosive online battles between axis and allied forces in a persistent war for European domination.

Heroes & Generals is built for multiple platforms all connected to the same massive community. The action part of the game is playable on PC, and the strategy part of the game is accessible on PC and iOS/Android through the free app Heroes & Generals: Mobile Command. In the first version of the app, players will be able to get a live overview of the Campaign showing enemy and friendly Assault Teams movements, and the built-in chat client  allows players to stay in touch with teammates 24/7 from virtually anywhere. In the next version of Heroes & Generals: Mobile Command, players will be able to move and manage Assault Teams in the app as well.

‘Old Republic’ Team Faces Layoffs

Bioware Founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk posted an announcement on the Star Wars: The Old Republic forums confirming layoffs at the MMO’s Bioware Austin studio. The scope of the layoffs has yet to be revealed, but changes in LinkedIn resumes such as Community Manager Stephen Reid (via Joystiq) suggest this isn’t just a trimming of contract and part-time players.

Overkill Announces Collaboration with Valve

Bungie’s Project ‘Destiny’ Detailed via Activision Contract

In the midst of Activision’s ongoing legal battle against ex-Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella (latest update here), a 27-page contract between the publisher and developer Bungie has surfaced courtesy of the LA Times. The ten-year agreement has Bungie on the line for four “sci-fantasy, action shooter games” in a franchise project currently dubbed “Destiny” (a term which Bungie filed a trademark for last year).

‘Aliens: Colonial Marines’ Confirmed for February 2013

In a blogpost over on the Official SEGA Blog, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford has announced that Aliens: Colonial Marines is currently set for a release on the 12th of February, 2013. 38 Studios Pays off Rhode Island, Governor Gives MMO Release Date

The second time’s the charm for 38 Studios. The developer’s second $1.125 million check sent to the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation cleared late last week, fulfilling the first payment on the company’s $75 million loan. The state believes the totality of the $49 million portion given to the studio has been spent, their next payment due on November 1st at $2.6 million.

THQ Not Publishing ‘Devil’s Third’

MCV reports that THQ announced during a recent investor’s call that Devil’s Third, currently in development at Tomonobu Itagaki’s Valhalla Game Studios, has failed to meet the company’s ‘profitability profile’ and that the publisher is therefore seeking another party to take over responsibilities for the game. Blizzard Issues Statement on ‘Diablo III’ Server Issues

Players around the globe have been encountering server issues rendering Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo III unplayable due to a need for constant internet connection, an issue the company released a statement apologizing for earlier today. In addition to proclaiming that all Battle.net problems causing the widespread lack of connectivity have been resolved, Blizzard announced that it will be delaying the game’s real-money in-game auction system back a few days to May 22nd.

‘Tomb Raider’ Delayed into Next Year

‘DOTA’ Trademark Dispute Resolved

The fight for the name DOTA seems to have come to a close. Blizzard Entertainment released a statement late last week concerning their ongoing battle with Valve Software over the trademark, both studios having games in development attached to the lucrative namesake. According to Blizzard, Valve will continue to develop DOTA 2, and Blizzard’s own sequel Multiplayer Online Battle Arena will change its name from Blizzard DOTA to Blizzard All-Stars. The House of Craft will retain the non-commercial rights to the name for its user-generated StarCraft II and WarCraft III communities. No further details of the settlement will be disclosed, according to Blizzard’s statement.

Neocore Announces ‘The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing’

20th Anniversary of ‘Wolfenstein 3D’ Celebrated with Free Mobile/Web Release

Bethesda Softworks announced today that they are celebrating 20 years of the seminal shooter Wolfenstein 3D - from their subsidiary id Software – with a free release. With a free to play version for browsers has launched alongside a limited deal that renders Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum equally cost-less on the iOS App Store. To further mark the location, Bethesda released a director’s commentary of sorts with id Sofware’s Technical Director John Carmack (above).
