Don’t panic. The folks at Hothead, developers of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness and Shank, are pleased to distribute to you the spoils of their tour across the universe with a new interactive version of Douglas Adams’ seminal Sci-Fi masterpiece A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The game will come courtesy of Megadodo Productions, also known for their withholding of the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.
“We’re super excited to be involved with such a legendary creation as A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The quirky and hilarious universe that Douglas Adams created became an instant classic for so many. All the hoopiest froods here at Hothead jumped on the chance to work on the project,” espoused Joel DeYoung of Hothead Games.
Happy that Earth will soon be destroyed, sending all us gamers on an interactive tour of all known existence through the lens of dry British wit? Comment below!
Can an RPG created using modern technology match the original text-based Infocom game co-created by Adams himself? I’ll be interested in finding out, but I’m not getting my hopes up. That was one of the defining experiences of my adolescence.
If anyone isn’t “elder” enough to have played the original, it’s easy enough to find and play using any of half a dozen old computer emulators or Infocom adventure interpreters. You can even play it on your phone if you want using Twisty or Frotz so you can pretend you’re texting a friend rather than visiting 1984. There’s even a HHGG app in the Android Market that seems to just package the original game with Twisty.
