In a recent conference call to its investors, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings told shareholders that the company would not be going forward with its plan to integrate video game rentals into its service catalog. Given the fact that Netflix customers that stream their content outnumber those that receive media by mail 2 to 1, the company’s abandonment of renting games can be seen as an extension of its larger effort to gradually fade out the mailing of products entirely. However, the high costs of streaming server maintenance and content licensing fees does not completely rule out the possibility of Netflix returning to the option in the future.
