PSNStores reports that there is a possibility the SingStar franchise will be continuing as a free-to-play experience in the near future, as Sony has quietly discontinued the SingStar Viewer application and replaced it with a notice that the complete SingStar experience will soon be available as a free download instead. More details are included after the jump.
Sony has not made an official statement regarding the matter, aside from the message posted in the SingStar Viewer application. It is therefore currently unclear to what extent SingStar will become a free-to-play title. The Viewer app was a stand-alone application that allowed players to browse the online store for SingStar content and check out community videos. A message on the official SingStar twitter feed confirmed that the application had been shut down, and that more information would be released this week.
SingStar originally launched for the Playstation 2 in 2004, with over 33 separate expansions having been released for the party game on both Playstation 2 and its successor over the years. The most recent expansion, SingStar: Back to the 80s, was launch in October 2011.
