EA announced its deal with Disney on Monday, which secured them the rights to develop and publish Star Wars games for a “core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres.” According to executive chairman Larry Probst however, EA is not planning on shipping a new Star Wars game in it’s current fiscal year which ends March 31st, 2014.
“Some of our most renowned and innovative creative teams are working on ideas in the Star Wars universe,” EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said today. “The new games may borrow from films, but will be entirely new stories and gameplay,” Gibeau also stated that EA’s Frostbite 3 game engine will be “Powering it all”.
As part of the deal, Disney does retain rights to create new titles in the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories. Gibeau said today that this does not prevent EA from making games for those platforms though.
“I do want to clarify one thing – we do have rights to make the games on all platforms; console, PC, mobile and tablet”. Gibeau concluded, “For the products that we’re building, you can expect that you will see them across all of those major platforms and we’re very excited about it. The Studios at DICE, Visceral and BioWare are really fired up and we’re excited about this opportunity and how it fits into our overall portfolio.
