Citing anonymous sources, Reuters reports that Microsoft has narrowed down its list of candidates to replace departing CEO Steve Ballmer to around five.
The external candidates include Ford CEO Alan Mulally and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop. Internal candidates Microsoft is considering includes former Skype CEO Tony Bates and EVP of cloud and enterprise Satya Nadella. Microsoft reportedly started with around 40 candidates for the position, and Reuters believes the process could still take a few more months.
Ballmer announced his retirement in August, not long after Don Mattrick’s decision to depart Microsoft to join Zynga as CEO.
