Square Enix discontinued its game streaming service Core Online just fifteen months after launching in August 2012, the publisher hasĀ announced on its website.
“Core Online was released as an experiment to see what demand there would be for HD games played via the browser,” Square Enix said. “However, due to limited commercial take-up of this initiative, Core Online closed on Friday 29th November 2013.”
Core Online was a streaming service which allowed user to play games such as Hitman: Blood Money and Mini Ninjas natively within Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Internet Explorer. A subscription of $2.99 a month was available, users could purchase single levels or entire games, and game time could be earned by watching video content.
