Not coming as a surprise to anyone, but last weekend’s “Black Friday” shopping spree in the States brought huge surges in console purchases for both Sony and Nintendo. The Big N recently reported that over 1 million DS/DSi units were sold over the weekend, beating the all-time handheld record of the same weekend previously set by the Game Boy Advance in 2002. The company also moved over 550,000 Wiis over the holiday, a solid step-up from its pre-price cut lull earlier in the year, but down from the system’s 800,000 units sold during the same time last year.
On the other side of the industry, Sony has happily reported the sale of over 440,000 Playstation 3 units over the holiday, a definite improvement over its lackluster sales in October. Sony had no comments on the sales of the PSP (including the recently released PSPGo! model) when contacted by Elder-Geek. Neither company released remarks on software sales, and while Microsoft has not released a similar press statement as of yet, it can be assumed that this year’s “Black Friday,” as it has been every year, was a upswing in profitability for the Xbox 360 as well.
