Last week, Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto stated that he was intending to suggest a possible re-release of the ninth installment in the Final Fantasy-series at the next board meeting. Today, Hashimoto has sent out a Tweet stating that since this year makes the tenth anniversary of Final Fantasy IX, many of the Square Enix board members were in favor of re-releasing the game via Playstation Network. An official announcement should come later this week.
Final Fantasy IX was originally released in 2000 for the Playstation in Japan and North America, with a release in Europe following in 2001. Hironobu Sakaguchi, the founder of the Final Fantasy series and president of the Mistwalker studio, once stated that Final Fantasy IX is the “closest to [his] ideal view of what Final Fantasy should be.”
Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII have previously been re-released on Playstation Network, and are currently available for download at $9.99 each.
Nice! Now if only they’ll rerelease the Anthology and Chronicles so we can play FFVI and Chrono Trigger without the load times from PS1 and still enjoy the sweet FMVs, then we’ll be in business!
Randy, there still will be the load times, since the PS1 games are just running on Emulators. I noticed some lag when playing FFVII going in and out of menus.
Better yet they should release Chrono Cross.
Hellz yea!! too bad i don’t have a PS3
Awesome, but both games sell for only $9.99. This is an instant buy, and I am going to say that I would expect the price to be $9.99 just like the other two and Tactics.
*looks at disc copy*
….yeah, I’ll still buy it again.
lol… really?!?
I will, too. I’m turning my PSP into an RPG lifeline for when the bombs drop and I’m left wandering the wasteland.
FFIX portable is a pretty compelling reason to download this. I would if my original black label is worth anywhere near what FFVII is?
Also, do you need a PS3 to do this, or just a PSP with WLan access.
Apologies for being a neophyte, or just lazy, make your choice…
Final Fantasy IX is my second favorite game in the series behind only IV. This is great for those that have not played it before or don’t already have it. I won’t be buying it though because I still have my PS1 copy.
