Gearbox Looking to Make Own Duke Nukem

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011 | Posted by Robin Meijer | 1 Comment

Speaking at a panel during PAX last weekend, Gearbox Software CEO  said that when his studio got hold of Duke Nukem: Forever, which had been in development for over 12 years at that point, he expected to see a trainwreck, but was actually quite pleased with the work 3D Realms had done up to that point. Gearbox finished the game after one additional year of development, with Pitchford adding that he’s proud of the additions his studio made to the game.

He finished by adding that now that Gearbox has acquired the IP to the Duke Nukem franchise, the studio wants to develop its own Duke game, though that is something that would be talking about “soon, [..] but not today.” Kotaku has a transcript of all of Pitchford comments with respect to Duke Nukem: Forever, which are also available after the jump.

Ghosts ‘N Goblins and Exed Exes Released for Virtual Console

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011 | Posted by Robin Meijer | Comments Off

Capcom has announced that it has recently released two arcade classics from 1985 for the Nintendo Wii through the Virtual Console. Both of the titles, Ghosts ‘N Goblins, and Exed Exes, are available at a 800 Wii points, or $8.

Exed Exes, is a vertically-oriented scrolling shooter that was originally released in the United States as Attack of the Savage Bees. The other title, Ghost ‘N Goblins, is a classic platformer that is widely considered to be amongst the most difficult games to beat, with the game becoming a major hit in Western territories when it was ported to the NES a few years after having been released in arcades. The current release of the game concerns a port of the classic arcade version, with the version of Ghost ‘N Goblins that was made available in the Virtual Console in 2007 being an updated version of the NES port.

In an interview with 1Up.com, the creator of the classic Shenmue series confirmed that the concept for a possible third installment in the franchise has already been created. While he did not indicate whether the game is currently in production at Sega, he did say that in comparison to the first two installments in the series, the game would focus a lot more on the player than the actual in-game world.

Raven Software Lays Off Development Team

Monday, October 11th, 2010 | Posted by Robin Meijer | 2 Comments

Activision has confirmed today that one of the two remaining development teams at its wholly-owned subsidiary Raven Software has been laid off. In August 2009, another development team at Raven Software was already let go. With the current workforce reduction, only a single team of developers remains at the studio. Several unnamed sources have told Kotaku, that this remaining team focus its attention on developing downloadable content. Explaining the move, Activision stated that “with the recent completion of Singularity, Raven Software is realigning its workforce to better reflect the studio’s upcoming slate.”

Raven Software was founded in 1990 by Brain and Steve Raffel, who still remain with the studio. In 1997, the studio was acquired by Activsion. Games developed by Raven Software include Shadowcaster, the Heretic and Hexen series, the original two installments in the Soldier of Fortune franchise, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force, and two installments in the Star Wars: Jedi Knight series. This generation, the studio developed Quake 4, Wolfenstein, and Singularity, as well as multiple X-Men related games.

X-men Arcade Coming to PSN / XBLA

Monday, October 11th, 2010 | Posted by Robin Meijer | 5 Comments

Konami and Marvel Entertainment have announced that they are currently preparing an 18-year old arcade classic for re-release on Playstation Network and the Xbox Live Arcade. X-Men Arcade, as this re-release is known, was originally released for arcade cabinets in 1992 and was simply known as “X-Men“.

The game features a set of six X-Men, including Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Colossus, and Dazzler, facing off against Magneto and members of his Brotherhood of Mutants in an attempt to rescue Professor X and Kitty Pryde. X-Men Arcade will feature upgraded visuals, leaderboards, and 4-player local cooperative play, as well as 6-player online drop in/drop out coop.

Konami, the original developer of the game, has not revealed pricing information or a release date for the game. However, it was indicated that the game would be released at some point in the current year. The port is being handled by Backbone Entertainment, which previously ported games such as Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to current-generation consoles.

A set of screenshots of X-Men Arcade is included after the jump.

Duke Nukem Forever Confirmed

Saturday, September 4th, 2010 | Posted by Eliot Hagen | 2 Comments

You’ll forgive us if we take this with a grain of salt, seeing as we’ve been promised this since a few of our writers were in grade school. But yes, Duke will finally find his way to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2011. The game, now being developed by Gearbox Software (Borderlands) and published by 2K Games, is actually playable at booth #3417 at this year’s Penny Arcade Expo.

Christopher Hartmann, president of 2K, said

“After a hiatus from the video game world, Duke Nukem is back and better than ever. The return of the King from the glory days of shooters will satisfy our patient, die-hard fans, as well as a new generation of bubble gum-chewing, flat top and shades-wearing bad-asses. Make no mistake about it – Duke Nukem Forever is a testament to the era of when shooters were bodacious and fun.”

We look forward to playing this, but we’re understandably skeptical as to how he’ll manage to make up for 14 years of waiting. Hail to the King, baby!

Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath PS3 Remake

The award-winning 2005 title, Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, will be revived in the Spring of 2011 in the form of an enhanced remake for the PlayStation 3. Expect everything that’s standard fare with HD remakes, including 720p visuals, normal mapping, dynamic shadows, refined audio, PlayStation Move support, and bonus material. Just Add Water is the company in charge of the remake, and the managing director, Stewart Gilray, said–

“Since word got out that we’ve been working with Oddworld Inhabitants there have been many rumours circulating about what we’re working on. Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is the first project in what we believe will be a long and fruitful relationship. Having the chance to update this great title and release it on PS3 is just a brilliant opportunity, not least for us, but for the fans too.”

Expect more info as the release date approaches.

Duke Nukem Forever Development May Be Ongoing

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010 | Posted by Robin Meijer | 2 Comments

Kotaku reported today that according to undisclosed sources, developer Gearbox Software is currently working on the ill-fated Duke Nukem: Forever. After developer 3D Realms defaulted last year, development on Duke Nukem: Forever was apparently halted after having been in constant development for over twelve years. Legal battles ensued between developer 3D Realms and publisher Take-Two Interactive.

According to the sources, the game is currently in development at Gearbox Software and will be released under the name of this studio. In addition, one source indicated that a demo for the game will be made available later this year. Earlier this year, it was indicated that Gearbox had at one time been working on a prequel to the Duke Nukem series, known as Duke Begins.

Take-Two has confirmed that it does indeed own publishing rights to the current title, but would not comment on whether or not the game is in development. Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software, also refused to comment on these speculations, but indicated that he may be able to better clarify the current situation at PAX Prime 2010, which is set to be held from September 3rd until September 5th in Seattle, Washington.
