Duke Nukem Forever Development May Be Ongoing

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010 | Posted by Robin Meijer | 2 Comments

Kotaku reported today that according to undisclosed sources, developer Gearbox Software is currently working on the ill-fated Duke Nukem: Forever. After developer 3D Realms defaulted last year, development on Duke Nukem: Forever was apparently halted after having been in constant development for over twelve years. Legal battles ensued between developer 3D Realms and publisher Take-Two Interactive.

According to the sources, the game is currently in development at Gearbox Software and will be released under the name of this studio. In addition, one source indicated that a demo for the game will be made available later this year. Earlier this year, it was indicated that Gearbox had at one time been working on a prequel to the Duke Nukem series, known as Duke Begins.

Take-Two has confirmed that it does indeed own publishing rights to the current title, but would not comment on whether or not the game is in development. Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software, also refused to comment on these speculations, but indicated that he may be able to better clarify the current situation at PAX Prime 2010, which is set to be held from September 3rd until September 5th in Seattle, Washington.

Ubisoft unveiled three new projects during its press conference earlier tonight. The first of these is a title currently only known by its working title Project Dust, which showed a civilization in a prehistoric setting. This project, for which Ubisoft is cooperating with Éric Chahi is expected to be released in Spring 2011. The game will be available exclusively by means of digital distribution through Xbox Live or the Playstation Network.

The second new title that was announced concerns a new installment in the Rayman-franchise. This new episode, known as Rayman Origins returns to the roots of the series as a 2D platformer. Expanding the design of this game to offer similar creation tools for first-person shooters and RPGs, Ubisoft announced that a new platform known as Maniaplanet is currently in development. Maniaplanet will serve as a platform from which Trackmania, Shootmania and Questmania (as these shooter and RPG creation tools are known respectively) will operate. The fight between current Fallout franchise right holders Bethsoft and original developer Interplay has been long and arduous one. What began as a financial disagreement over the re-release and possible future use of the first two games in the post-apocalyptic RPG series, with a federal court deciding in favor of Interplay. Bethsoft quickly reported its plans to continue action against the company in the appeals process, but a recent SEC filing from Interplay reports that Bethsoft has since dropped the appeal. John McAllister Breaks 28 Year-Old Asteroids World Record

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 | Posted by Eliot Hagen | 2 Comments

I’m currently in the IRC chatroom on a livestream of John McAllister’s attempt to break the world record score in Asteroids. Three screens line the top of the webpage. One of a crowded room with supporters, fellow players, and a TV crew, one focused on John’s face, and another pointed at the game screen. 58 hours in, he’s at 41.1 million points, less than 200k away from breaking the 41,336,440 record set in 1982 by 15 year old Scott Safran of Cherry Hill, NJ.

The IRC is populated by over 240 users, chatting about games, previous records, and notable figures.  Over 1100 people are tuned in, prepared to witness gaming history.  We’re all just waiting for that moment when the 28 year old record will be broken. You can check out the live stream here, but don’t expect it to last much longer. The finish line is in sight.

UPDATE: At approximately 1:19 AM EST, John McCallister broke the world record with an estimated final score of 41,338,740 points (not taking into account uncounted rollover).  The score is currently being verified by Twin Galaxies and Walter Day.  He had been playing for close to 59 hours straight and we at Elder-Geek.com would like to congratulate him on his accomplishment!  Now get some sleep, John! Oh, and Happy Birthday!

Duke Nukem Forever Demo Released

Thursday, April 1st, 2010 | Posted by Gavin Greene | 1 Comment

This combination rival boss battle/sex scene acts as the game's controversial prologue

The sex gods at File Planet have surprised the world by using their necromancy stats on 3D Realms and coming away with the demonstration build of the long awaited Duke Nukem Forever. The latest in the line of TPS-FPS-RTS-TSA-FUBAR-Knitting Simulators has been anticipated for well over a millennium since the previous Duke Nukem game (Duke Nukem Has a Chat with a Mormon Child) was released and became an unheard-of success, winning 24,601 Game of the Year Awards and somehow being responsible for the founding of Greenland. New gamers approaching the franchise for the first time in their Karmic Life-Cycle are recommended to put a thin layer of nail polish around their gaming space in order to achieve the full effect of the game’s 16-D technology.

Monday, March 29th, 2010 | Posted by Robin Meijer | 9 Comments

Last week, Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto stated that he was intending to suggest a possible re-release of the ninth installment in the Final Fantasy-series at the next board meeting. Today, Hashimoto has sent out a Tweet stating that since this year makes the tenth anniversary of Final Fantasy IX, many of the Square Enix board members were in favor of re-releasing the game via Playstation Network. An official announcement should come later this week.

Final Fantasy IX was originally released in 2000 for the Playstation in Japan and North America, with a release in Europe following in 2001. Hironobu Sakaguchi, the founder of the Final Fantasy series and president of the Mistwalker studio, once stated that Final Fantasy IX is the “closest to [his] ideal view of what Final Fantasy should be.”

Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII have previously been re-released on Playstation Network, and are currently available for download at $9.99 each.

Microsoft to Launch Natal Late 2010, Reveals Game Room

Thursday, January 7th, 2010 | Posted by Robin Meijer | 1 Comment

In an interview released earlier today, Microsoft’s President of Entertainment & Devices Division Robbie Bach revealed that the motion-control camera Project Natal will be available during the holiday season later this year. Furthermore, he went on to reveal a new addition to the Xbox Live Arcade, known as the Game Room.

In line with the original concept for which the Xbox Live Arcade was designed, Game Room will allow players to use their Avatars to navigate an online environment, somewhat similar in concept to the Home software available on the Playstation 3, in which they can play classic arcade games. Bach stated that “[t]here’s a generation of people [...] who grew up with a set of games like Centipede. [...] Game Room is the idea of bringing that back to the market, and bringing that to a very broad audience.” The Game Room will be available for both the Xbox 360 and PC and is being developed by Krome Studios.

The Game Room will allow players to purchase games for prices ranging between 240 and 400 Microsoft, which equals roughly $3 to $5. Players will also be able to play a one-off game for 40 points, roughly 50 cents. Games purchased on the Xbox 360 version of the Game Room will also be playable on the PC, and vice versa.

A trailer for the service can be found after the jump.
