To little surprise, Blizzard’s epic follow-up to the hallowed Starcraft has been met with both critical favor and record-setting sales. In the U.K., the sequel outsold the lifetime sales of the original in its first 24 hours on store shelves. The game sold over a million units within on Day 1, making it “the best selling game of 2010 within its first 24 hours of availability.” So far, Starcaft II has managed to push 1.5 million units in its first 48 hours, making it the fastest-selling PC game (according to Gamestop) and the “fastest-selling strategy game of all time.”
“We launched StarCraft II in 11 different languages and on 5 different continents because we wanted to make sure as many players as possible were able to log on and play on day one,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game, and we look forward to welcoming even more players to Battle.net in the weeks and months ahead.”
“GameStop had more than 3,000 stores open at midnight, so our StarCraft players got a jump start on playing the epic experience Blizzard consistently delivers with its games,” said Bob McKenzie, senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop. “StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is officially GameStop’s fastest-selling PC game since Blizzard launched World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King in 2008.”
It’s awesome to see the game getting good reputation it deserves, but I can’t afford it. I’ll wait to get Starcraft 2 when the next expansion is released (should be cheap by then).
Awesome, now I just want to see July’s NPD report to see where it placed, and worldwide sales. I also want to know if they factored in digital download sales, cause that could push the number up higher. I also want to know how many of those copies sold were collector’s editions (just curious, as it would make it easier to see how much money Blizzard made).
