The 2000’s and 90’s set list are a bit disappointing, but everything else seems awesome, especially the 70’s selection.
Needs more of The Doors and ‘We Won’t Get Fooled Again’ by The Who. Seriously–they introduce a keyboard peripheral and deprive us of that song?
Also, Organ Grinder (Extended Overhaul) by DJ Shadow.
The set list has alot of really good songs even if quite a few of them have already been in previous Guitar Hero games. Also I know the song was already in Lego Rock Band but I was hoping that Final Countdown was going to be in this one for the keyboard parts.
I’m saying this as a guy who was a pretty avid Guitar Hero player in college, and who has spent enough time with the game to build up some pretty legit skills. But with the push for “realism” in GH and RB lately, I have to say:
Just learn to play the real damn guitar.
Rhythm games have been in a steady decline since the release of “Guitar Hero Rocks the 80’s.” After that, both GH and RB started flooding the market with quickly-produced spinoffs which did nothing to innovate gameplay. I understand that RB3 has added a lot of gameplay mechanics, but consider this: why would a rhythm game aimed at casual gamers strive to be more realistic? Would that not alienate the casual gamers who are playing this at their friends’ apartments? Would that not drive the more experienced players to take up actual instruments?
I can only speak for myself, but my reaction to this was to say “screw it, this thing is essentially a guitar, so why wouldn’t I just play the guitar instead of this game?”
I think Harmonix is trying to go both ways… and will probably do it with a lot of success.
On one hand, if you like the other games in the series, and you are ok with still hitting buttons on a plastic guitar, then you will be right at home with this one.
However, if you want to learn guitar, this could be a jumping point. The Madcatz button guitar or the actual guitar that you can play pro-mode will teach you the basics for beginners and challenge advanced guitarists. As someone who recently started learning guitar, I am very interested. Pricing is the main deterrent right now.
