Industry analyst Michael Pachter has estimated that during Microsoft sold over 2.5 million Xbox 360 consoles in the previous month, while Sony allegedly only managed to move a total of 1.2 million Playstation 3 units. Compared to the number of consoles sold in December 2009, this would imply a small year-on-year decrease in the number of Playstations sold, but an increase of more than 90% in the number of Xbox 360s sold. According to Pachter, Nintendo managed to outsell both Microsoft and Sony by moving more than 2.6 million Nintendo Wiis, but this is an overall decrease of more than 30% when compared to the results from December 2009.
Last week, Microsoft president Steve Balmer announced that the Xbox Kinect had already been sold more than 8 million times in the two months since it was released, greatly contributing to the number of consoles sold during the holiday season.
