Though Harmonix, a developer who is completely focused on the dwindling rhythm-genre, may be facing a difficult market, it remains optimistic for the future as it has stated that their Kinect-based Dance Central is outperforming the multi-platform Rock Band 3 at retail. The game has become one of the most succesful titles for Kinect, selling more than 1.2 million copies in less than three months in North America alone, excluding the number of titles sold in combination with the Kinect sensor itself. Over this same period of time, approximately 8 million Kinects were sold.
Though Harmonix was not able to directly confirm reports that a sequel to the game was already in the making, they did confirm that a large part of their development staff was currently working on the franchise.
