Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is one of the essential 80s flicks, up there with Ferris Bueller and The Breakfast Club. One tepid sequel and two horrible TV series (one animated, one live action) later, and it looked like the series had met a very bogus end. Not so, claims Keanu Reeves, legendary portrayal of one Bill S. Preston, Esquire in the original two films. According to the actor, he and the original screenwriters (Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon) are hammering out a script for a long belated sequel.
The untitled three-quel would have series protagonists Preston and Theodore Logan middle-aged and struggling to come up with a song to unite and save the future of which the first film spoke. At this point, there has been no word on whether or not they would be recasting the late George Carlin as the duo’s time-traveling mentor Rufus or simply leaving the part out of the script. According to Alex Winters (Ted), it was one of the factors that delayed the recently reopened production.
“When we last got together, part of it was that Bill and Ted were supposed to have written the song that saved the world, and it hasn’t happened,” Reeves said. “So they’ve now become kind of possessed by trying to do that. Then there’s an element of time and they have to go back.”
“I believe the writers are six weeks away from a draft,” Reeves added. “No pressure!”
