According to a report by market researcher Flurry, freemium applications in the Apple App store now account for more than 65% of the total revenue. In January and June, Flurry tracked the performance of over 90,000 Apps, and found that the revenue from freemium titles rose from 39% of the total in January, to 65% last month.
Flurry reports that between .5% and 6% of all players of a freemium title actually spend money on the various premium options in these games. However, as these users generally spend more on such games than they would for regular premium titles, and the userbase of a freemium title can be sizeable, the revenue raised by such games can easily exceed that of titles with a more conventional payment structure.
“Freemium?”
That is one of the dumbest words I’ve read in a while. That’s almost as bad as “Edutainment.”
