Since its debut in 2007, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise has seen annual installments, and 2012 will be no exception. Alexandre Amacio, Creative Lead on Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, revealed that another sequel is indeed scheduled for next year. In an interview with Eurogamer, Amacio confirmed that, similar to how Revelations concludes the tale of both Ezio and Altair, the unnamed 2012 Assassin’s Creed will conclude the story of Desmond.
“In Assassin’s Creed we set up a timeline with this whole end of the world plot of December 2012,” explained Amacio, “That’s fast approaching, and the story we have to tell, we obviously need to do it before we arrive at that point.”
He continued, “We had such a complex and strong narrative that we ourselves did our best to just try to execute these games before that date…It would be stupid of us to be centring a game on a semi-reality and then have that conclusion happen after that date in real life.”
The world of Assassin’s Creed looks to be bigger than the sum of its protagonists, as the series is planned to continue after Desmond’s story wraps up, albeit not with yearly releases.
“Assassin’s Creed is all about cycles – we have the Ezio cycle and the Altair cycle, and both of those are set to conclude in Revelations and we have the Desmond cycle, which is set to end on December 2012,” said Amacio. “But there’s many cycles within the brand – that’s the whole point. History is our playground.”
“We’re already structuring the way we do Assassin’s Creed, so it will no longer ever be like that,” said Amacio. “Our development approach is changing so our cycles aren’t structured the same way – so it gives us a little bit more development time.”
Is the potential to finally get answers to Desmond’s cryptic storyline something that will keep you hanging onto the Assassin’s Creed franchise, EGs? Would relaxing the development turnaround help the series overall? Post your thoughts in the comments section!
I am glad they are finishing up the story. All these yearly releases really diminish the feel I have of playing Assassin’s Creed. I like the series, but Ubisoft really should have taken two years at least between sequels to improve the visual engine (it was impressive to see the combat change from ACII to Brotherhood though; a much needed improvement, as I still have yet to get the 10 kills in conflict without getting hit in ACII cause of the combat engine being fickle).
I got the 10 kills by loading up on smoke bombs and stabbing three or four guys in between throwing them.
