A new website, Twitter and Facebook page have appeared bearing the brand of a beloved RPG studio from the past. Under the watch of Interplay, as it was years ago, the revived Black Isle Studios (Fallout, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale) proclaimed that “Our goal has always been to make the world’s best RPGs.” The Black Isle brand had collapsed following a studio-wide layoff in 2003, with many of its prominent employees moving on to found and work under Obisdian Entertainment that same year.
Interplay has yet to announce any plans for game releases under the studio, nor whether or not any former Black Isle staff have been brought back on board.
Given its vaporous existence as of late (known in recent years largely for the Fallout lawsuit against Bethesda) Interplay’s actual resources for game production – outside of ports of its existing IP like Earthworm Jim – is unsure at best.
