Develop has reported that EA has laid off a significant (if unspecified) amount of the staff at Playfish. This comes after the news from earlier this week that Electronic Arts was shutting down social titles made by Playfish. EA acquired Playfish back in 2009 for $275 million.
On top of this, MCV India has reported that 50 employees have been laid off at the EA Hyderabad, India mobile studio. The number of employees affected comes from a user on the Nasscom Gaming Forum on Facebook, Udaya Bhaskar.
“EA India lay-offs today due to few major titles sunset , good number of people effected. any help or guidance will be very helpful for getting a new job in gaming domain.” Udaya Bhaskar posted. Then when asked how many people were affected Bhaskar replied “around 50 people”.
EA has been approached for comment, and reiterated the statement issued when the Montreal layoffs occured.
“These are difficult decisions to let go of good people who have made important contributions to EA, and whenever possible we retrain or relocate employees to new roles. Streamlining our operations will help ensure EA is bringing the best next-generation games to players around the world.”
However EA told Joystiq that the company will not be commenting on the status of Playfish.
