As spotted by a NeoGAF user, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe filed patent applications regarding a head mounted display in May. One is for the head mounted display device itself, while the other focuses on hazard detection while a user is immersed in an interactive experience. This includes allowing certain noises through noise cancelling headphones like an alarm, and unblocking a users vision if needed.
Both applications list senior engineer at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s WWS Stereoscopic Team, Ian Bockerstaff and senior development manager at PlayStation Europe, Simon Benson as the inventors.
Reports surfaced in September claiming Sony was developing a PlayStation 4 virtual reality headset. Sony reportedly was planning to reveal the device at Gamescom until those plans fell through at the eleventh hour.
