Electronic Arts is exploring ways it can keep three of its older Battlefield games running online following GameSpy’s announcement that it will be shutting down its servers on May 31st, IGN reports.
In response to a question on Twitter asking if GameSpy’s server shutdown would see an end to online multiplayer for Battlefield 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 2142, the Origin Twitter account stated that EA is working on “transitioning those games after the shut down so you’ll still be able to play them.”
An EA representative has since clarified in a statement to IGN that while the company is facing “technical hurdles” to keep the games playable, it is still working on a solution.
“We’re working on finding a transition, but still have technical hurdles to overcome,” the representative said. “We will make an announcement when there is news to share.”
Activision has stated it will not be affected by the server shutdown, while companies including Sega, Capcom and Rockstar have confirmed to IGN that they are researching solutions. Ubisoft and 2K Games have yet to issue a comment on the matter.
