It’s difficult to understand how a movement only a few months old could influence the production of a game near to going gold, but Irrational Games Co-Founder and Bioshock Infinite Creative Lead Ken Levine recently admitted being inspired by the populist protestors of Occupy Wall Street. According to a Washington Post interview with Levine, the aggressive anti-authority mentality and loose organization of the Occupy movement helped solidify some of the similar motifs for Bioshock Infinite‘s Vox Populi.

$70 million could publish a lot of independent game projects. That’s the kind of money Angry Birds developer Rovio Mobile has to throw around, and they have apparently been approaching other studios with indie mobile projects in need of funding. The report by Develop was circumvented by Rovio’s spokesman when asked, but the representative did hint of future plans yet unannounced in that department.

What began as a teaser in the ticker that runs below the main menu of Deus Ex: Human Revolution became a series of numbers and symbols fresh for the fan community cracking. This started a sort of ARG that resulted in a username and password for a website that housed a cryptic screenshot featuring security footage of a gruffy looking Adam Jenson with the phrase “What is the Missing Link?”. A RSS listing from the game’s official website decodes the question: new downloadable content called – appropriately enough – The Missing Link.

In some news that’s anything but normal and somewhat unexpected for so early in an expansion pack; Activision Blizzard announced in an earning call yesterday that subscriptions for WoW were down to 11.4 million. It was noted that the subscription base in WoW tends to change based on the consumption of current content. Thus, the theory at the moment is that a chunk of the player based either finished or became worn out with the current content.
Given the two year gap from 11 to 12 million subscribers (October 2008- October 2010) we were already seeing signs of slowing down for the MMO behemoth considering it hit 11 million in the four years prior. So while Activision Blizzard is playing it off like it’s not as big a deal as it seems, the recent trend seem to hint otherwise. Very few people have currently finished all the content available at heroic difficulty, which means worn out is the likely culprit. Perhaps players are simply getting tired of WoW after six and a half years? If this trend continues, will we see an even larger subscription loss with the future releases of Guild Wars 2 and The Old Republic? Your thoughts!

The original Wolfenstein had a bit of a revenge streak to it, considering that players killed hundreds of Nazi grunts as a man named BJ Blazkowicz. But a new independent mod of the 1992 3D engine will have players faced with a much more direct struggle. Sonderkommando Revolt, set for release in early 2011, throws players into the 1944 Auschwitz concentration camp facility as Zalmen Gradowski, a titular Sonderkommando, part of a “special unit” of Jewish camp workers that aided in the killings. Surprisingly, the game boosts real-life inspiration, based on the October 1944 uprising that cost the lives of 451 Sonderkommandos and 3 higher-ranked Schutzstaffel soldiers.

After a tremendous black-lash from fans, it appears that Blizzard has retracted its proposed Real ID forum system, which would have transitioned all Usernames on the Battle.net site to the player’s real life names.
