Following successful transition into free-to-play titles of games like Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeon and Dragons Online, Cryptic Studios has announced that its action-oriented MMORPG Champions Online will also be going free to play in the near future. The game was originally launched in September 2009,  and an Xbox 360 version of the game was cancelled earlier this year for an unspecified reason.

The transition from subscription-based to free-to-play will be combined with a major game update, which introduces many new features and adapts existing gameplay elements to make the game more accessible to newcomers. A closed beta will be set up early November, and will feature these upcoming changes. It is currently not clear when Champions Online can be expected to make a full transition to free-to-play.
