Strategy Analytics, a global market research organization, has recently published a report that indicates the Playstation 3 has managed to exceed the installbase of the Xbox 360 in 2010. The report, which has been summarized by Gamasutra, indicates that both consoles are still well behind the total number of Nintendo Wii’s sold.
According to this recent report, just over 43.4 million Playstation 3 consoles had been sold to consumers worldwide before the end of 2010, with the Xbox 360 not managing to rise above 42.9 million. Strategy Analytics states that the sales of Playstation 3 have exceeded those of the 360 for at least the previous two years, and it expects Sony will continue to outsell Microsoft in 2011, despite the success of the Kinect peripheral. Specifically, the firm predicts the Playstation 3 will outsell the Xbox 360 by 2 million units, amounting up to a total of 15.7 million units worldwide.
The report indicates that the relatively weak presence of Microsoft in Europe and Asia continues to act “as a drag on its global performance.” A recent estimate by Gamestop states that while the number of Xbox 360s sold in North America still exceeds the number of Playstation 3s by approximately 10 million, the Playstation 3 is leading by a margin of 1 million units in Europe.
