Valve has announced that it is planning to begin distributing non-gaming software via Steam in addition to the almost 1700 video games currently available on the service. The distribution of these applications will begin on September 5th.

Though no list of software that is coming to the service is currently available, Valve states that these lineup will include software ranging from “creativity to productivity.” The software will distributed in the same way gamers already gain access to their content: with streamlined installation, cloud saving, and automatic updating available for all programs. Though there is already a lineup of software that will be released in the coming months, developers of non-gaming software will also be able to get their applications onto Steam via the Greenlight service that is coming to Steam this month.
