Microsoft have issued a statement to The Verge today, confirming a number of Xbox Live accounts for senior Microsoft employees have been targeted by hackers.

“We are aware that a group of attackers are using several stringed social engineering techniques to compromise the accounts of a handful of high-profile Xbox LIVE accounts held by current and former Microsoft employees.” the statement read, in part. “We are actively working with law enforcement and other affected companies to disable this current method of attack and prevent its further use. Security is of critical importance to us and we are working every day to bring new forms of protection to our members.”

This news follows reports from yesterday that Microsoft’s new Xbox Entertainment Awards service had a security breach, compromising sensitive information of users who voted. The service has since been brought offline for maintenance and Microsoft’s official word is that it is “experiencing technical difficulties”, and they are investigating the matter.
