In an interview with IGN, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford spoke of building a new Duke Nukem game. The studio head stated that “I think what I would do and what Gearbox would do would be a little different. I think it would be amazing, and I look forward to that.” This isn’t Pitchford’s first hints on the subject, having mentioned similar interests in a panel at PAX 2011.
Gearbox had acquired the rights to the Duke Nukem brand back in 2010, after taking over the final polish stages for Duke Nukem Forever, which released the following year after a legendary decade-plus production cycle (see Elder Geek’s review of the game here). “I willingly and lovingly acquired the brand. When I did that, I wasn’t thinking that the only goal is just to make sure everyone could play Duke Nukem Forever,” Pitchford explained. “The real goal for me is I’d like to build a Duke Nukem game again.”
The statement is far from a confirmation of any actual production, but Pitchford’s dedication to the brand was what aided his studio’s acquisition of the license in the first, so consider this possible (if not guaranteed) until we hear more.
