Nintendo Registers ‘Super Mario 4′ Domain

Friday, April 13th, 2012 | Posted by Gavin Greene | 1 Comment

IGN reader ‘tyrant_PSN’ (via MCV) was the first to notice Nintendo’s rather direct domain registration for a “supermario4.com”. And unlike most other publishers, Nintendo isn’t trying to hide it. The Big N did announce that a new 2D Mario game was in development at its  presentation to investors this past January, but the company has remained mum so far on any direct correlation between its production and the domain registration. It may not be exactly what fans are expecting; Super Mario Bros. 4 already exists as the Japanese title for Super Mario World.

Thursday, April 12th, 2012 | Posted by Gavin Greene | 1 Comment

The stigma of an “Adults Only” rating – and the subsequent ban many top retailers have on all products that achieve said rating – have kept most publishers from producing anything that could go beyond “M for Mature”. It’s a stigma that Patricia Vance, President of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, wants to see diminish.

The interest group confirmed that the bots inflated the amount of signatures on the petition (68,678 at time of publishing) by between 3000-5000. AllOut posted an update stating that they are currently looking for the source of the spammers (they also insist they had reached the 60,000 signature mark before the attack).

‘Bulletstorm’ Sequel Cancelled by Epic

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012 | Posted by Gavin Greene | No Comments

A direct follow-up to People Can Fly’s arcade shooter Bulletstorm had made it into production before the project was canned by Epic Games. The Polish team has since been moved to a different, unannounced project. According to Epic Games President Mike Capps, the original Bulletstorm wasn’t enough of a success to merit the budget for a sequel. Speaking to Gamespot UK at PAX East this past weekend, Capps is quoted as saying, “From a sales perspective it was good, but not amazing. I think EA was hoping we’d do better”.

A fan-created poster for the San Francisco "What Would Molydeux?" Game Jam

What began as a parody twitter account has resulted in a global push of creativity, now responsible for literally hundreds of game prototypes designed from Twitter messages. Peter Molydeux, an account lampooning the lavish ideas and proclamations of Peter Molyneux, offhandedly mentioned the idea of creating functional game builds out of the account’s messages with only this past weekend to work with. What followed were livestreamed events around the world (the one in London attended by Molyneux himself) as teams and solo designers got to work over the two-day period.

Bioware Sends Protestors’ 400 Cupcakes to Children’s Shelter

Friday, March 30th, 2012 | Posted by Gavin Greene | No Comments

However you find the fan debate on the endings to Bioware’s Mass Effect 3, it’s hard to argue how amusing and overall beneficial its been to sit back and watch all parties involved try to out-charity one another. The latest offensive in the “Retake Mass Effect 3” campaign’s effort to draw attention to their distaste for the final chapter of the space opera saga – which should now be known as the “Cupcake Offensive” in its own Mass Effect codex entry – sent 400 green, blue, and red cupcakes numbered 1-3 to Bioware’s Edmonton offices at a cost of $1,005 (reportedly raised in 1 hour on ChipIn).

‘Frozen Synapse’ Dev Parodies ‘ME3′ Ending, “Retake” Campaign Begins Cupcake Initiative

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 | Posted by Gavin Greene | No Comments

Mode 7, the designers behind Frozen Synapse, have temporarily changed the ending to their turn-based strategy game to (according to the developer) parody the fan reaction to Bioware’s endings to Mass Effect 3 experiment with the concept of changing a game ending post-release. Proudly declaring that “This is the ending to a computer game…We don’t care if you like it”, the new ending boasts future utopias of dinosaurs and trolling ponies. The new cutscene will remain for seven days before the original ending is restored and, given it’s timing, it’s hard to not associate the change with the internet backlash against Bioware’s RPG.
