Following the successful transition of Dungeons & Dragons Online into a free-to-play MMORPG, Turbine and Codemasters have re-released The Lord of the Rings Online as a free-to-play title. The game was originally released in April 2007 and has been complemented with two expansion packs in the years following release.

Similar to the pricing structure currently in use for Dungeons & Dragons Online, which was also developed by Turbine, players have full access to the game, but can choose to unlock additional features at an additional fee. VIP members, who are players who continue to pay the subscription fee, will receive a monthly allowance of Turbine points, which can be spent in the in-game store.

The game can be downloaded on the official The Lord of the Rings Online website, which can be found here.
