George “Geohot” Hotz, famous for having “jailbroken” the iPhone as well as recently publishing the rootkey of the Playstation 3, recently announced on his website that he intends to go and buy a Windows Mobile 7 device. In response to this message, Brandon Watson, an entrepreneur currently working with Microsoft, twittered that he would give a phone to Hotz for free if he’d contact Watson. The actual message twittered by Watson was as follows:

#geohot if you want to build cool stuff on#wp7, send me email and the team will give you a phone – let dev creativity flourish #wp7dev

Whether Hotz has accepted the offer, or  is not clear at this time, but the timing of the offer may give Microsoft a publicity boost as Geohot has been involved in a legal battle with competitor Sony over having published the rootkey to the Playstation 3. This has allowed for an influx of new hacks, which supposedly allowed players to unlock trophies without having to perform the associated in-game actions, and led many cheating players in popular games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops.

  1. So basically they want him to hack the device and create legit stuff that MS can push out to customers, so the system isn’t hacked. I see what you are doing MS, just not so sure Geohot will do what you want (although there is the possibility).
