According to Fusible, the domain name for an “Avengers: Battle for Earth” project was filed back on May 3rd, the day before the “Avengers” film released in the United States. Registered by Marvel Characters, Inc. through brand protection company MarkMonitor, the domain currently resides on Ubisoft’s nameservers.
Earlier rumors on a tie-in project for Marvel and Disney’s film cast it as either dead or indefinitely delayed. Given the film’s presence in theaters worldwide, the likeliest release window for a directly related video game would be for the movie’s DVD/Blu-Ray release. Another other possibility is that the game won’t be a traditional release at all, more of a social brand extension similar to Facebook’s Marvel: Avenger’s Alliance, and thus have a bit more leeway in terms of launch period. The domain name’s 2013 expiration date makes the latter theory less probable, however.
If it is true that Ubisoft will be the game’s publisher, the game will prove to be the exception noted by company CEO Yves Guillemot when the company announced it was reducing its focus on licensed products back in 2010.
