InsideMobileApps.com reports that according to an unidentified source, Microsoft will begin phasing out its virtual currency before the end of the year. The Microsoft Points are currently used in the Zune Marketplace and on Windows phones, as well as in the Xbox Live Marketplace.
According to the source, Microsoft will have replaced the system with one that utilizes the actual currency that is associated with the region in which the system is registered. Any balance remaining on an account will be automatically converted into the local currency. Supposedly, developers and publishers have been informed of the upcoming changes and are advised to take this into account when planning their strategies.
Microsoft has declined to comment on the matter.

Late last month, the man behind Mega Man launched his first game since leaving Capcom. Keiji Inafune released Dr. Momo’s Island, a social game where players collect eggs to raise and trade creatures, through Japan’s GREE mobile social game network. While currently exclusive for Android devices, an iOS version is currently in development. Dr. Momo’s Island was co-produced by Inafune’s Comcept (which includes both a planning organization and a production department, Intercept) and Atlus’ parent company Index. Comcept/Intercept’s next project is King of Pirates, an action-adventure game for the Nintendo 3DS.

Back in the 1980s, a sentient egg named Dizzy had some pretty grand adventures on the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum, becoming something of a cult icon on the systems. What began as some rumors stoked by Twitter messages from Codemasters’ Communications Manager Rich Eddy and a teaser trailer was recently revealed to be an in-development mobile project by the company for release next month. Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk is scheduled for release December 9th, for iOS and Android devices.

Twitter is being made into a video game. The status message broadcast system is the inspiration for Tweet Land, a game in development for the iPhone that turns Twitter messages into in-game events. For example: should your co-worker post a message on Twitter about accidentally running over a cat, the game will integrate something having to do with cars, domesticated animals, and/or roadkill.

Namco Bandai recently announced that the original Soul Calibur is being ported onto iOS devices, arriving precisely on “soon”. The port has a sterling legacy to compete against, as the Dreamcast version (EG’s number 1 game on the system) is lauded as being as perfect an arcade experience one could have on console. We know nothing of how the game will function on the various iDevices, considering fight games in the past have implemented a wide array of input techniques on the platform. Expect more news on the port as the press for the latest game in the franchise: Soul Calibur V (now with 100% more Ezio Auditore) builds toward its January 31st release date.

2003′s cell-shaded, comic book shooter XIII didn’t start a revolution on the charts or with the critics – most citing it as a lavishly produced but mechanically underwhelming game – but French developer Anuman Interactive looks to be giving the license another chance with a new game. If the title is any indication, XIII: Lost Identity looks to be keeping with amnesiac special agent’s quest for memory that carried the first installment.

Part tech demonstration for the new iPhone 4S, part game announcement, Epic Games President Mike Capps’ reveal of Infinity Blade 2 at Apple’s press event earlier in the week gave us a lot of information to wade through. Acting as the unspoken “hardcore” launch title for the new mobile, Blade will offer a suite of iOS 5 features, including the cross-platform data transferring iCloud. The sequel – once again developed by Epic subsidiary ChAIR Entertainment – will also offer new online features, like Clash Mob, which tasks players with “massively social” challenges for rare weapon and item unlocks.
