A new level to the rumors of Sony “secretly” making a PSP2, Eurogamer is reporting a new device has been making preliminary showcase rounds to several big publishers. Supposedly sporting a similar look to the PSP-3000 with touch controls on the back. The reports come from three separate developers, who also say that several near-completion first-party games were also on display with the device. As always, Sony’s official response when contacted is that the company “doesn’t respond to rumors or speculation.”

Dangan-Ronpa is many things: an action-adventure game set against Japanese Pop Art, a murder mystery set to reinvent 2.5D graphics, and the latest release to emphasis the weirdness of high school in Japan. The still regional title (roughly translating to “Winning an argument with a bullet”) is set for release November 25th in Japan, with west coast release and title still pending. Dangan-Ronpa will take players through a super-elite Japanese high school that has been locked down and put under very unusual rules.

The sixth game in the beloved God of War franchise, and its second on the PSP, Ghost of Sparta has kept the industry in expectation despite a very conservative information flow. Despite the comparatively low amount of advertising so far, Ghost of Sparta is still hoping to make a big splash in the market when it launches this November 2nd.

With Officially Licensed merchandise has always included hats and t-shirts, Sony has taken the game a step further and announced a new line of everything from clothing to appliances boasting the “iconic” Playstation logo. Sony Computer Entertainment will put out guidelines to designers on how best to incorporate the design, and will have final approval before a product goes to market. The line of products intends to “deliver various quality lifestyle products that will make the PlayStation brand more accessible than ever.”

In the church of strategy role-playing games, a screenshot of Tactics Ogre is in stained glass above the rectory. So its no big surprise that the folks at Square Enix are interested in re-capturing the enthusiasm the game once held. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, is a PSP-exclusive, from-the-ground-up remastering in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions not too long ago. The game’s visuals and soundtrack will be reworked and re-arranged, respectively, along with new character growth development and a curious “Wheel of Fortune” mechanic that will add more fire to the game’s already gargantuan replay value.

The bite-sized, micro-cost games model continues to make serious profit, as Sony has announced that it just sold its millionth Playstation Network Mini. One of the (arguably few) highlights of Ubisoft’s E3 Press Conference this past month was its reveal of a new IP based on the life and work of the self-proclaimed King of Pop. Now revealed to be Michael Jackson: The Experience, the game is set for a November release this year for the DS, Wii, 360, PS3 and PSP platforms. The Experience will allow players to “step into the shoes” of the world-famous music star and re-live his most memorable performances (although no specific venues or setlists were revealed.)

With continuing the Metal Gear franchise – now on two separate fronts – and producing both Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and an unannounced exclusive project on the Playstation 3, Kojima has a lot on his plate in the present. But in an interview with Famitsu (via 1UP) the auteur designer put forth his thoughts on what to expect from him years down the road.

Tetris is one of the most recognizable pieces of pop culture in history, so its no surprise how frustrating the inability to get good multiplayer out of the brand could be. For the past 10 years, original creator Alexey Pajitnov has been attempting to integrate the functionality, but to little avail. Sitting down with Gamasutra, Pajitnov expressed his irritations and the Tetris brand itself.

With classic console back catalogs making their way to handhelds and consoles alike in droves, it comes as little surprise to hear of the possibility of Sony’s Playstation Portable receiving a collection of Turbografx and Neo Geo titles. Assorted games from both libraries were previously made available in the Japanese Market via Playstation Network downloads, but so far the West has yet to gain that ability. The emulation apparently comes with updating your PSP to the 6.30 firmware, as the above picture indicates. No confirmation from Sony has been given, and no ports have yet to be announced.

With online retail sites being the new method dejour for leaking new hardware – especially on the Sony side of things – (see: PS3 Slim), the fact that a new model PSP is being listed on a Japanese retail web portal has garnered some interest. More prevalent, however, is that both the new model PSP (termed PSP-4000) and the E3-winning Nintendo 3DS are listed as becoming available at the end of this year, in Japan at least. As expected, the official comment from Sony when asked by Elder-Geek is that the company does not speak on rumors, but with TGS around the corner and a lot left uncovered in the Playstation brand at E3, there exists a strong possibility that the PSP has a bit more to give than just a new ad campaign.

With Nintendo pushing 3D hard in its next DS iteration and Sony leading the console charge in the same field, it seems odd that the Playstation Portable also doesn’t aid the cause, with only a new advertising campaign announced at last week’s E3 for the handheld. Vice President of Sony Worldwide Studios Scott Rhode recently told IndustryGamers that the company has no plans for 3D integration in the future, either, stating rather simply “It’s just not something we’re announcing right now. It’s just as simple as that. It’s all I can tell you.”

Note: Image not from new promotional campaign
Sony revealed that “Role Models”-actor Bobb’e J. Thompson will complement Playstation 3 promoter Kevin Butler in an upcoming PSP promo campaign. Presented as “Marcus”, the advertisements starring Thompson will be aimed at promoting the Playstation Portable as the portable gaming machine built with the console experience in mind. Specifically, the campaign seems aimed at stressing that games or “apps” on mobile phones are unable to give the player a good gaming experience. The new campaign will be launched later this week.

According to Gameinformer, director of the acclaimed series Assassin’s Creed Patrice Désilets has left Ubisoft and the video games industry on June 11 to take a “creative break.”
Désilets played a pivotal role Ubisoft Montreal’s existence since the studio’s inception. He also played an instrumental role in the Prince of Persia series across multiple platforms.
His departure comes as a staggering loss after Clint Hocking of Splinter Cell and Far Cry 2 left the studio earlier this year. Jade Raymond, who worked heavily with the original Assassin’s Creed, has also left the studio to control the Ubisoft Toronto studio.
Ubisoft officially stated: “With his role on project essentially done, Patrice Désilets has decided to take a creative break from the industry and is no longer working on Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.”

The beloved (especially by Randy here at Elder-Geek) old-style physics-heavy platformer Trine became a surprise hit, so its no surprise Atlus is hoping to continue the trend with a sequel. With literally no information known about the second Trine, its appearance at this year’s E3 will act as our literal first glimpse into the game. The game is still being developed by Frozenbyte, but no other details have been released. The title is expected to be demonstrated alongside Knights in the Nightmare for the PSP, Rock of Ages (from Zeno Clash developer Ace Team), and turn-based strategy Etrian Odyssey III.
