In a reveal that most likely had someone playing Guns N Roses somewhere, Panasonic has introduced the world to a new handheld gaming device, currently dubbed The Jungle. A machine specifically designed for MMO play, the current launch lineup consists solely of Battlestar Galactica Online. Resembling a netbook more than a DS, the system features a full QWERTY keyboard and two thumb pads. No further details are known about the device, but more is expected from Panasonic (whose last foray into gaming was the ill-fated 3DO) in the coming months.

Looks like hulking action fodder isn’t the only thing movie producers are gleaning out of the games industry. Long-time classic puzzle-adventure series Myst looks to be making its way into theaters, courtesy of Roserock Films and Gran Via Productions. The production houses have reportedly teamed up with Mysteria Film Group’s Adrian Vanderbosch and Isaac Testerman to obtain the rights. While no production details are known at this point, the producers state that the mythology outlined the novels will be the script’s jumping off point.

After removing the use of the word ‘Taliban’ from its multiplayer components, citing “concern for the servicemen and women and their families”, Electronic Arts and the new Metal of Honor have seen widely varying reactions from both in and outside the gamer community. The United States Army, having long supported the single player campaign with consultants and media footage like photographs and gunfire audio, only learned of the multiplayer’s ‘Taliban’ inclusion once the initial media frenzy began. Since, the Army has reacted less favorable towards the game.

Linden Labs, the creators of the leading virtual community of Second Life, have reported that they have been “entertaining” buyout offers from Microsoft. TechEye has reported on a supposed twitter message from a Linden Labs employee stating that “A little birdie told me that Microsoft may have silently offered to buy Linden Lab this week…entertaining offers and Microsoft has stepped up with a bid.” Neither company has confirmed or denied these reports, opting to not release a statement to Elder-Geek when contacted.
